Our Brave Spaces Policy

Feminist Readings in Motion? is a brave space, i.e. an environment of learning, sharing and growing together built on the awareness that creating and sustaining a comfortable and safe space is an incessant, collective and brave endeavour, based on political practices of solidarity, engagement, diversity, and the active challenging of the unjust hierarchies along the axes of race, gender, class, sexuality, geography and language, and other and unseen axes which negatively affect particularly those who are Black, women, queer, trans, from working-class backgrounds, in the Global South, the differently-abled and migrants.

Realising these aims take specific forms within the online environment. We know, for example, that there have been numerous examples in the last year of bad faith actors “Zoom bombing” events and broadcasting offensive video material. On a smaller scale, people in online meetings do not always think to mute their microphones and this can cause disturbances. Please remember to always be respectful to both the speakers and viewers; and ensure that your behaviour is conducive towards the creation of a “brave space”. Also ensure that your microphone is muted and switch off your camera as soon as you “enter” the Zoom meeting, unless otherwise specified by the panel Chair. You are welcome to type questions and comments during the papers in the chat section. During the Q&A session, the chair will collate the questions and comments typed here and pose them to the speakers for comment. If there is enough time, they will also open the floor for more questions. To ask a question, “raise your hand” by clicking the correct button and the chair will call on you. Remember to “lower your hand” once you are done. Please keep all questions here and in the chat section respectful, succinct and to the point.

We thank you in advance for accepting the invitation to make Feminist Readings in Motion a safe and intellectually engaging and challenging experience for everyone! Prospective participants living with disabilities and/or facing specific challenges, please contact us (feministreading@gmail.com) so we can assist you to better access and participate in the event.
